Core Commerce E-commerce Platform Versus Yahoo Store
By Cari Haus of Cedar Lake Direct
During the past ten years, I've considered and tried a number of e-commerce options, including Core Commerce and Yahoo Store. From 2002 through 2006 I used the Miva platform, but in 2006 an e-commerce consultant I was using convinced me to switch to Yahoo store. Yahoo store has a lot going for it. Last I checked, there were about 45,000 Yahoo stores in existence and one in eight e-commerce stores out there was a Yahoo store. Obviously, Yahoo does something right. Our transition to Yahoo was a bumpy one, however. We seemed to lose a lot of traffic, and ranking, during the transition. Our first developer definitely didn't deliver. The store wasn't near as user-friendly as Miva had been, and the costs just kept going up. Despite these hiccups, we still liked Yahoo store. There's a tremendous amount of power in the interface. Compared to Miva, it seemed like driving a Cadillac. The dashboard of the store featured a number of reports that were helpful to us in our SEO efforts, and in time we built our traffic (and sales) back up. After selling the Yahoo store in 2008, I decided to set-up another e-commerce site. My research led me to try Core Commerce, and I must say I really like what I've found. Core Commerce has great customer service, their user interface is intuitive, and I was able to set-up the store myself with a day or two of hard work. They had some nice templates, and there are a number of other free features built into their interface that I really like, such as coupons, discount options, an affiliate option, newsletter, widgets, etc. In the end, I believe both Yahoo Store and Core Commerce to be excellent e-commerce solutions. However, in my personal experience Core Commerce has been much less expensive to set-up than Yahoo Store. I found myself baffled by Yahoo's proprietary programming language (RHTML), and people who understand it don't come cheap (try $55-125 per hour). You can easily spend $4000, or more, having a developer set the look and feel of a Yahoo store and add all the bells and whistles you want. In contrast, I've spent a whole $50 on Core Commerce (having a friend tweak the CSS and design me a professional logo). If you want the Cadillac of e-commerce stores, you can find it--for a price--with Yahoo Store. Core Commerce isn't far behind, however--and some would argue that it's not behind at all. Simply put, Core Commerce offers a lot of "bang for the buck." I didn't have to pay a developer to program the look and feel of my store, because the features I wanted were already built in to Core Commerce. In addition, Core Commerce seems to be adding features all the time. Given the lower monthly fees, and reduced start-up costs, Core Commerce has been a great option for my latest e-commerce store.
Cari Haus owns and operates Cedar Lake Direct, an e-commerce store that runs on the Core Commerce platform and sells Vegeburger, as well as other vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives. In addition to overseeing the store, Cari has authored or co-authored more than a score of books on topics ranging from business and health to parenting, faith, and life.
